ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established, has the right to be represented on that committee. In other words, it is an independent, worldwide federation of national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards (Management Systems) that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. ISO 9001:2015 is an internationally recognized standard for creating, implementing and maintaining a Quality Management System (QMS) for any organization.
Total Quality Management (TQM), is a general philosophy to achieve business excellence. The philosophy of TQM is that every employee should works towards the improvement of work culture, services, systems, processes and so on to ensure a continuing success of the organization. TQM deals with the basic principle of empowerment, education and training, data-based thinking and team work. ISO 9001:2015 is the mean to realize this philosophy by defining actions, procedures, adopting risk-based thinking, preventive controls to minimize negative effects and to make maximum use of opportunities as they arise to achieve planned results and customer satisfaction.
Both TQM and ISO 9001:2015 adopt PDCAIS (Plan, Do, Check, Act, Improve & standardize) approach. Methodology used in this article is in-depth study and observation. It has been observed that in many organization ISO 9001 Standard requirements and TQM philosophy are two standalone systems. The novelty of this paper is on how to develop a Maintenance Management System based on integrated approach of ISO 9001:2015 standard requirements and TQM philosophy.
