Emi Ota, Junichi Yasuda, Takehide Hashimoto, Daisuke Koganezawa, Mai Kinjyo and Keika Gen

Objective: This study aimed to elucidate and evaluate the dynamics of swallowing when using different thickness palatal augmentation prosthesis (PAP) in healthy individuals. We observed changes in pharyngeal pressure during the swallowing process according to the wearing of PAP which was different thickness in healthy individuals using highresolution manometry (HRM).

Materials and methods: Ten healthy subjects (average age 34.2 ± 9.5 years) wearing a PAP of three thicknesses ingested water jelly and thin rice porridge. Maximum swallowing pressure and timing events were recorded with a 20-sensor HRM catheter.

Results: Healthy individuals that wore the PAP of 10 mm and swallowed jelly and thin rice porridge showed significantly increased maximum pressure at the tongue base and significantly decreased maximum pressure at the lower pharynx.

Conclusion: The thickness of PAP as 10mm enhanced the anchor of the tongue and increased the maximum pressure at the base of the tongue.

A Cultural View on Mental Health through the Fact of Migration

Mahire olcay Çam and Merve Uguryol

Culture is a structure that constitutes individual’s world of symbols, values and meaning. Emotions, thoughts and behavioral patterns of an individual are shaped within this structure. These patterns shaped by the culture, influence the mental health of an individual both positively and negatively. Globally intensified migration of the recent years has strongly triggered this influence. Cultural elements, on the one hand, pose a risk to mental health, but also on the other hand, they play a significant role in the recovery from a mental illness. What are important to identify are the risk factors of the culture and to incorporate the positive aspects of culture in health care in the recovery process. We think that health services and treatment will be much more effective if each health professional that touches the life of a mentally disordered will provide health care with a cultural perspective. In this article we focus on the fact of migration while investigating and giving an overview on the interaction of culture with health, disease and the process of recovery.

Mismatch between Correlation Coefficient and Visually Evaluation for Similarity of F-wave Waveform

Todo M, Fukumoto Y, Tani M and Suzuki T

Objective: F-wave is one of indexes for excitability of the spinal nerve function. Our previous study suggested the change in F-wave waveform also shows the state of voluntary movement. In our previous study, we reported correlation coefficient 0.95 to one of the same criteria of the F-wave waveform. However, there were F-wave waveform that judged to be the same waveform by visual observation despite of although low C.C. In this study, we consider factors.

Methods: We measured the F-waves, presented 5 trials of 30 F-wave to 3 people. As a result of analyzing the inconstancy between judged as same waveform and C.C. of each F-wave waveform, a pairs waveforms with C.C. of less than 0.95 were analyzed.

Results: The C.C. of the waveform in a pair of waves was 0.71. The waveform shifted while visually confirming that the onset latency of matched. As a result, latency was extended 0.625 ms and C.C. improved from 0.71 to 0.96.

Conclusions: It was suggested that the C.C. shows a low value even when slight latency deviation occurs.

Significance: It is appropriate to use objective evaluation of the C.C. when judging the same waveform.
