Tracheostomy

A tracheostomy is a surgically created opening in the neck leading directly to the trachea (the breathing tube). It is maintained open with a hollow tube called a tracheostomy tube. A tracheostomy is commonly referred to as a stoma, which is the name for the hole in the neck that the tube passes through. A tracheostomy usually is temporary, although you can have one long term or even permanently.
